Today SIS is one of the largest support services firms in the Asia-Pacific region and the second largest security business in India, growing at an incredible rate of 45 % per annum for the last 10 years. This August SIS was listed on BSE, The Bombay Stock Exchange as well as on NSE, the National Stock Exchange of India.
A social enterprise
The founder of SIS, R.K. Sinha, known affectionately as RK, stated at the recent listing ceremony: “What we believe that we have achieved is that by a good training program and continuous efficient operational management and monitoring, we can do wonders and that is what we have done. We deal with man power – that is our raw material and our final product. Basically this is a social enterprise which saves the society by uplifting the living standards of the poor of the poorest segments of the society, making them productive in the national economy growth.”
In my book Approximately Right I tell all about the making of an Asian security industry leader. As all successful things it was based on quite simple insights. RK once told me that he built the company out of three simple goals:
Happy x 3
“In our business there are three stakeholders: the employee, the customer and the shareholder/owner of the company. We need to create a win-win situation in which we keep the employee happy, the customer happy and the shareholder happy. This virtuous circle starts with making the employee happy – if you train him, pay him for the work he does and make him part of your organization, then you, in most cases, will have a happy employee. If the employee is happy he will help to keep the customer happy. Of course you must know what the customer wants and then train employees in order to meet that requirement. And the operational excellence must embody honesty, integrity and discipline. So if the customer is happy what will happen? The customer will never argue about the rate for the job or deny equipment or facilities for the guards to use. If the employee and the customer are happy, the company will make a reasonable margin that ultimately will keep the shareholders happy.”
Securitas and SIS
It has been a pleasure for me and Thomas Berglund to be part of this journey together with the whole team and to share our 23 years of experience from Securitas. We were very proud when the bell of BSE rang at exactly 10 a.m. on the 10th of August 2017. The journey for us started at the Peabody Hotel in Orlando, USA 2005. A first brief meeting with Uday and Rituraj developed into a long term business relation and a very strong friendship for life.
And do you know what is the most fun of all – the journey has just started.
